Key West: The Ultimate Budget Friendly Guide

Key West on a Budget: An Insider’s Guide

Key West is a beautiful destination that offers a fun, vibrant atmosphere and a unique culture that's hard to find anywhere else. But if you're planning a trip on a budget, there are a few things to consider before booking your tickets.

When to Avoid Key West

While Key West is a great place to visit year-round, there are a few dates to keep in mind that may make your trip a little more expensive or less comfortable. The biggest event to avoid—unless you're into it—is Fantasy Fest. This annual event, typically held in late October, brings a wild celebration to the streets with costumes, parades, and plenty of nudity. If that's not your scene, it’s best to steer clear of Key West during this time.

Additionally, hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th. While you can still visit during this period, the risk of storms is higher. However, it’s worth noting that many people travel during hurricane season without experiencing any issues. The key is being prepared and staying flexible with your plans.

Getting to Key West

Flying into Miami International Airport and driving down to Key West is a budget-friendly option. The drive along U.S. Route 1 offers some of the most stunning views, especially as you cross the famous 7 Mile Bridge. It’s an experience in itself, with plenty of spots to pull off, grab a bite, or take a dip in the crystal-clear waters. For a smooth, easy car rental experience, I recommend using Sixt Car Rental. They make the process quick and hassle-free.

Where to Stay

Key West is surrounded by water, but you might be surprised to learn that there aren't as many public beaches as you might think—just two spots with public access. If you're visiting Key West specifically for the beach, I recommend staying at a hotel or Airbnb close to one, or ideally one with its own private beach. I have quite a few specific Airbnb recommendations that you can find on my social media or schedule a call to learn more!

For a comfortable and affordable stay, I suggest Margaritaville Beach House. Located on the island’s north side, it offers a prime location and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s right across from the beach, though you’ll need to cross the street to get there.

Where NOT to Stay

On the other hand, Ibis Bay Resort used to be a great choice but has seriously declined in quality. I do not recommend staying there. They advertise a private beach, but it’s covered in rocks and glass, making it unusable. The rooms are outdated, unclean, and uncomfortable, and there’s even the issue of the curtains being old bed sheets! Additionally, they have hidden fees that aren't disclosed until you arrive, which can leave you with a surprise bill. It’s just not worth it.

Bars and Happy Hours You Can’t Miss

Key West is known for its lively bar scene, and there are plenty of spots to grab a drink without breaking the bank:

  • The Dive Bar Shirt Club is a local favorite with excellent service, a small but tasty food menu, and happy hour from 4 PM to 6 PM every day. They also hand out tokens with each drink, which can be redeemed for a free drink later in the week.

  • Dante’s Pool Bar offers a fun atmosphere with pool beer pong, a decent menu, and a happy hour from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM Monday through Friday. Apps are around $6 during happy hour, and you can get buy-one-get-one-free drinks.

Dining on a Budget

For some great budget-friendly bites, Harpoon Harry’s is a must-try. This downtown spot offers a delicious, affordable breakfast all day long and is famous for its homemade hot sauce. Sandy’s is also a favorite for its fantastic chicken empanadas.

If you’re craving something a bit more substantial, Mangia Mangia Pasta Cafe serves up fresh, homemade pasta at reasonable prices. The cozy atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for an affordable yet satisfying meal.

Fun and Free Activities

One of the best free experiences in Key West is the Sunset Festival at Mallory Square. Here, you can watch the sunset, enjoy live performances, and shop for handmade goods from local vendors. Plus, you can grab a drink at one of the nearby bars and enjoy the view.

Special Experiences Worth the Splurge

If you're looking for something special, treat yourself to a meal at Landmark Restaurant. Located on a private island, you’ll take a ferry to get there and can explore the island and its beach after your meal. The view of the sunset is spectacular, and if you're celebrating a birthday, they’ll bring out your cake with a candle.

For dessert lovers, a visit to Key West Cakes is a must. Known for making cakes for celebrities, it’s by far the best bakery in Key West. Trust me—you won't regret trying their cakes!

For something a little more unique, check out The Retro Room. They offer free games like pinball and Pac-Man, so you can play while enjoying a drink. It’s a great place to hang out with friends and unwind after a day of exploring.
