Wilmington, North Carolina: An Insiders Guide
Insider's Guide to Wilmington, NC: The Best Places to Eat, Drink, and Stay
Wilmington, NC, offers the perfect mix of vibrant city life, beautiful beaches, and delicious food. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend getaway or an extended stay, this charming coastal town has something for everyone. Here's my insider’s guide to making the most of your time in Wilmington, from where to stay to the best spots for food and drinks.
How to Get There
If you're driving, Wilmington is easily accessible by car, and parking downtown is convenient. If you’re flying in, ILM Airport is small, easy to navigate, and just a short drive from the city center. Renting a car is a great option if you want to explore the area, though you can also get around with affordable Uber or Lyft rides.
Where to Stay
For a stylish and comfortable stay, Arrive Wilmington is my top recommendation. Located downtown, it’s within walking distance of fantastic restaurants, bars, and attractions, but far enough from the nightlife that you won’t be disturbed at night. The hotel has a beautiful private patio, a bar, and luxurious rooms, making it the perfect base for exploring Wilmington.

Bars You Have to Try
Wilmington is home to a fantastic bar scene, with options to suit every vibe. Here are my favorites:
Barbary: This local dive bar is laid-back and pet-friendly. Make sure to stop by and see Ryan and Nick, who will treat you right.
Ivy: A stylish bar just around the corner from Barbary. It has a relaxed vibe, and Bob is the bartender you’ll want to see.
WTF: A bit further of a walk, but worth it for their amazing craft cocktails.
Where to Eat
Wilmington has a thriving food scene with options for every palate. Here are some of my top picks:
Floriana: This upscale Italian restaurant offers a cozy bar for quick service or private patio seating overlooking the river. The duck and pasta dishes are exceptional.
Beer Barrio: For incredible Mexican food, check out Beer Barrio. Their margaritas and burritos are definitely worth the visit.
I Love NY Pizza: Craving pizza while walking around downtown? Stop by I Love NY Pizza for a quick slice. For a more luxurious pizza experience, head to Slice of Life, where the fresh, high-quality pies will impress.
Lula’s: A hidden gem for craft cocktails, though it’s not quite the same since Bob from Barbary moved to Ivy. Still, it’s worth checking out.
Sweet n Savory Cafe: Not located downtown, but definitely worth the drive. Their breakfast is top-notch, and while it gets busy, it’s well worth the wait.
Wrightsville Beach
If you’re headed to Wrightsville Beach, I’ve got some insider tips to make your visit feel like a private getaway. Want to enjoy the beach like a local? Let me plan your trip and give you the inside scoop on the best hidden spots.
Tower 7: Don’t miss the Mexican food at Tower 7, especially the chips and queso, which are divine.
Blockade Runner: Check out the restaurant at the Blockade Runner hotel for great live music and a beautiful patio.
Oceanic: While the views are amazing at Oceanic, the food and service often fall short, so I recommend it for drinks rather than a full meal.
Jimmy’s: A great nightlife spot in Wrightsville. It gets packed on weekends, so get there early and then hop over to Jerry Allen’s and Lagerheads to keep the night going.
